Disability Benefits

Your child must need more care and attention than other children of the same age for example with eating, washing, getting dressed or needing help to take part in social activities. Or your child must have extra mobility needs, for example difficulty getting around and/or severe behavioural problems.

There are two parts of Disability Living Allowance. One is the care component if your child has care needs; the other is the mobility component if they have mobility problems. Your child may just qualify for one or both parts. If you’re not sure that your child would qualify for DLA, please contact our Welfare Rights team on 0800 183 5757 for further advice

DLA has 2 components, the Care component which is paid at one of three different rates and the Mobility component which is paid at one of two different weekly rates. Click here for the current rates https://www.gov.uk/disability-living-allowance-children/rates.

Want to apply for DLA?

Call the Disability Living Allowance helpline on 0345 712 3456 (Textphone 0345 722 4433) for a claim form, Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. Or click here to download a claim form  https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/disability-living-allowance-for-children-claim-form. When you have this form, please call our Welfare Rights Team on 0800 183 5757 and we will call out to help you complete it.

You may be entitled to Carer’s Allowance if:

•you earn less than £123 a week

•you get the middle or higher rate of the care component of DLA

•you spend at least 35 hours a week (total) caring for your child

For further information follow this link https://www.gov.uk/carers-allowance

You may also be entitled to extra on other benefits if your child is on DLA. It’s important to report any change in circumstances straight away as it may affect the rate of DLA you get – in some cases you may be entitled to more. Follow this link for further information https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/benefits/sick-or-disabled-people-and-carers/disability-living-allowance/help-with-your-dla-claim/dla-change-of-circumstances/

If your (or your child’s) condition gets worse then you may be entitled to a supersession of your award. As the rules around this are complicated, please contact us for further assistance on 0800 183 5757.
